History Made Easy. Genealogy since the Conquest. London: W. Whittaker & Co, Ave Maria Lane, [1840s], 400 x 565 mm., plain engraved sheet with linen backing (as issued), folded to 284 x 162mm, contemporary manuscript additions to chart (adding monarchs beside their consorts), manuscript label with title to verso, paper split at folds but holding firm on linen, some chips to edges of paper sheet, some marks, provenance: Julia Holland, signature on label

This is an educational chart which displays the kings and queens of England and their genealogy. It shows, via a number of tracks round a central circle, a chronology of monarchs up until Queen Victoria. The chart was originated by Francis Reynard (1777-1841) was a mathematics teacher based in Reading whose genealogical chart, created around  1810, was many times reprinted. As his obituary in the Gentleman’s Magazine put it, the chart ‘for its originality and arrangement has been much praised and is extensively used’. It was certainly updated and reprinted many times but, unsurprisingly considering the sheet’s ephemeral nature and presumed often extensive handling by children, few copies have survived. We have not been able to locate another copy of this (comparatively late) edition (with no reference to Reynard) either at auction or in any reference library.
